Seasons in MOMENT: why the One Life board resets and what stays
MOMENT's global ranking doesn't reset on a schedule. It resets when the game itself changes, and that difference explains almost everything about how seasons work.
If you've pressed the ranked One Life button, you've played a season, maybe without noticing. A season is the container the global board lives in, and unlike the monthly or quarterly ladders of most games, MOMENT's seasons have no fixed length. This article covers what a season actually is, why a new one begins, and what happens to everything you did in the old one.
What a season actually is
A season is two commitments frozen together: one course and one version of the rules. The course is a single seed fed to the deterministic level generator, so every ranked player in a season faces the identical sequence of levels - the same gaps, the same turrets, the same mine placements. The rules version pins the exact physics those levels run on.
Together they make every score on the board directly comparable. When two players both show twelve levels, they cleared the same twelve levels under the same physics. There is no seed luck to argue about and no patch-timing asterisk next to anyone's record.
Why a board closes
A new season starts for exactly one reason: the rules changed. When an update alters how levels generate or how hazards behave - adding pulse lasers, mines, and dashers was one example, widening the mine's fuse was another - runs made before and after the change are no longer measurements of the same thing. Keeping one board across that line would mean ranking apples against oranges and pretending not to notice.
The reverse is also true, and it's a promise: if the rules don't change, the board doesn't reset. A record on a MOMENT board is never wiped by the calendar. It can only be superseded by a better run or retired together with the rules it was set under.
What resets, what stays
When a season closes, the old board is closed with its records preserved, and a fresh, empty board opens for the new rules. Being early in a season is a genuine opportunity, since the first verified runs define the early standings.
Everything outside the global board simply continues. Device bests for One Life, Daily, and Endless stay on your device. Shared course links keep working, because each link carries its own seed and version. Nothing you can lose is stored in a season except the board placement itself.
How to read the board
The board ranks by one number: levels cleared. Players who reach the same level share the same rank, and movement pixels or play time never break ties, so there is no pressure to grind an ugly statistic. Every entry has been verified by the server replaying the entire run, publishing a nickname is optional, and you can delete your own entry from inside the game whenever you like.
The current season
The season running now is pinned to the newest revision of the rules: the course includes the three newer hazards, and mines carry the widened fuse described in Devlog #3. Every entry on today's board cleared that gauntlet under those exact physics. The board is young, which is the best time to put a number on it.
